The Eagles too strong for Coast

TWO penalties and the competition's cheekiest goal gave Parramatta PCYC Eagles a convincing 4-1 win over Central Coast Lightning at Melita Stadium on Sunday.

The win maintained the Eagles' second place in the NSW Winter Super League soccer competition, three points behind Bonnyrigg White Eagles.

It was never expected to be easy against a team which had beaten Bonnyrigg just three days earlier.

The match was all over after 45 minutes, however.

Still, the Herculean tussle between two of the league's best midfielders, Central Coast's Darren Cooper and the Eagles' Ben Delicata, was a delight and Central Coast goalkeeper Matthew Trott saved four times when confronted one on one.

Despite Trott's brilliance, he could do nothing to stop a Achilleas Maricopoulos shot after 24 minutes after a hand had touched the ball in the penalty box.

Lightning struck in the 39th minute when a simple cross was completely misjudged by Eagles goalkeeper Stacy Alogdellis, and Jamie Lobb headed in.

But the half wasn't finished.

In the 42nd minute Mario Ghobrial waltzed around two players but was crudely brought down in the box. Maricopoulos converted again and Central Coast's Nathan Moobley was sent off for getting a second yellow card.

The Eagles capitalised on their numbers with a brilliantly executed goal in the 59th minute.

It was started on the right by Ray Miller and from the centre, Fred Graham passed to Ghobrial, who finished it off for one of the season's best goals. The Eagles' top goalscorer Andy Amegashie came on in the last seven minutes and three minutes into added time, scored with a cheeky back-healer from a pass by Gustavo Orcajo.

Meanwhile, the under-20s scored a valuable 3-1 win over the Coast and now share second spot. The Eagles play St George FC at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday at 7.30pm in round 17.
