Eagles work hard to avenge defeat

23/07/2008 12:01:00 PM
Parramatta PCYC Eagles avenged their round-six defeat with a 2-0 win over St George at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday.

The Eagles were made to work for their NSW Winter Super League soccer victory, however.

Both teams struggled for balance on the slippery surface; the Eagles' first strike came in the 25th minute and it was a Fred Graham solo.

Graham seemed to have been stopped but the rebound found his feet and he curled the ball low into the net.

Soon after, the Eagles suffered a major blow when key defender Achilleas Markopoulus was injured and replaced by Andy Amegashie.

St George pushed forward frantically after the break against the unsettled defence and in the 52nd minute the Eagles lost another key player in Ray Miller.

St George persisted with their attacks and the Eagles were now living dangerously.

The winning goal in the 83rd minute came against the run of play. From a free kick on the right side, Mario Ghobrial finished off after a goalmouth scramble.

The Eagles now share the lead with 34 points after 17 rounds but co-leaders Bonnyrigg White Eagles have a game in hand.

Meanwhile, the under 20s played a 1-1 draw after failing to convert a penalty in the last minute.

The Eagles will play Northern Tigers at Melita Stadium this Sunday at 1.30pm and 3pm.
