Magpies just brilliant

9/07/2008 1:25:00 PM
Wentworthville produced one of their best displays this season in overpowering Newcastle 36-12 in the NSW Cup at Energy Australia Stadium on Saturday.

So dominant were the Magpies, they led 36-0 with minutes remaining before allowing the Knights two converted tries at the death.

That dominance was portended in only the fourth minute when a clever crossfield kick by Mark O'Grady allowed Iwi Huaraki to cross in spectacular fashion before James Maloney's sideline conversion.

Then in the 14th minute the Magpies swooped on a fumbled kick and Brett Blaker crossed next to the posts.

In the 16th minute, winger Eric Grothe produced the brilliance that made him an international when he brushed off four defenders, before Maloney converted again for Wenty to lead 18-0 at half-time.

They didn't relent and straight after the break Hauraki scooted 70 metres for another try, again converted.

Newcastle finally threatened the Wenty line, only for Jonathan Wright to intercept and run 90m for yet another converted try.

Maloney continued his fun afternoon when he burst through flimsy defence and allowed Alf Beatham a try under the posts, before Newcastle's late consolations to Wes Naiqama and big prop Matt White.

Wenty coach Rip Taylor was very impressed with his side's display, considering the late NRL call-ups of Todd Lowrie and try specialist Joe Galuvao.
