Wenty in the big one

WENTWORTHVILLE advanced to the A-grade rugby league grand final with a 20-18 win over a determined Cabramatta at Merrylands Oval on Sunday.

Cabramatta will now play Seven Hills in this week's Parramatta junior rugby league final at Gabbie Stadium.

Wentworthville were also too strong for minor premiers Guildford, winning 20-14 in reserve grade.

Guildford will play Cabramatta in the final, but in C Grade division one, the star-studded Cabramatta beat Wentworthville 32-10.

The junior grand finals will be played this Saturday and Cabramatta are dominant.

They will be represented in every grade from under 9s to under 15s, and the under 17s and 19s will play their grand finals the following week.

This Saturday's grand finals will be played at Merrylands Oval, Ringrose Park, Torry Burn Reserve and Gabbie Stadium.

Magpies in a slump

Wentworthville have picked the wrong time of the NSW Cup rugby league season to hit a slump. Leaders a fortnight ago, the Magpies suffered their second straight defeat when beaten 16-6 by lowly Balmain-Ryde on the weekend. With one round left, Wenty remain second on 31 points, two behind North Sydney. Wenty's Jim Beam Cup team continued their late-season surge with a 29-22 win over Erina.

Ground renovation

An announcement of $300,000 renovations to the Holroyd Goannas' home ground, Gipps Road Reserve, will be made this Friday.

The Holroyd City mayor, Dr John Brodie, fellow councillors and the AFL will launch the jointly funded project that will see the Goannas playing on a bowling-green surface in 2009.

There will be an Auskick game as part of Friday's announcement.
