True all-rounder
It would be a toss-up for what has been the highlight of Mark Taylor's varied sporting career. Would it be his successful Test cricket captaincy, or scoring 334 in a Test on the subcontinent?
More than 800 runs on the 1989 Ashes tour, or perhaps his little-known double hat-trick against South Africa in Bowral?
Or playing fullback in a universities rugby league match at Lang Park as a State-of-Origin curtain-raiser?
Or even more little known: once being the Holroyd Goannas' best-and-fairest Australian Football player for the season.
Here's a clue. Taylor was spectator at the Goannas' home game on Saturday.
Up and down day
It was a weekend of mixed emotions for the Wenty Leagues Wheelkings in round six of the National Wheelchair Basketball League. First came the acknowledgment of Gerry Hewson.
The Wheelkings head coach, Australian women's head coach and former Australian Rollers squad member was awarded life membership of the NWBL on Saturday night.
Then came Sunday morning against reigning premiers, the Perth Wheelcats at Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre (RALC).
The under-strength Wheelkings were missing Dutch Paralympian Koen Jansens and Australian representative Jeremy Van Asperen but were valiant 94-78 losers, instead of the expected cannon fodder.
Wenty's outstanding junior Bill Latham again highlighted why he is regarded as the best player not heading to Beijing this year, scoring 30 points, 15 boards and seven assists against Australia's two top-ranked players Justin Eveson and Brad Ness.
The Wheelkings next game is against the Wollongong Roller Hawks this Sunday in Shellharbour.
Parramatta's title
Parramatta have won the division-one under-13 NSW girls hockey title in Coffs Harbour.
After moving through their respective pools undefeated, Parramatta and Newcastle met in the final.
Parramatta won 4-0.
