Fire station closures deplored

23/07/2008 11:58:00 AM
Firefighters have met Parramatta MP Tanya Gadiel to seek her support in the fight to stop stations being randomly closed.

Four firefighters from Silverwater, Wentworthville and Parramatta spoke with Ms Gadiel on Friday.

The NSW Fire Brigades Employees' Union has been engaged in a dispute over pay rises and changes to working conditions for many months.

Two concerns the firefighters discussed with Ms Gadiel were changes to their "10/14'' roster and the possibility of stations being closed.

Jason Morgan, from Parramatta fire station, said if stations were randomly shut the public would be at risk.

"At the moment stations are strategically placed and it takes a certain amount of time to get to certain areas,'' he said.

"If one of the stations was not open - say Wentworthville for example - and a fire was in Wentworthville then the person with the fire has to wait for trucks from Northmead or Parramatta to arrive which could take several more minutes.

"The closest two trucks are sent if one of the stations is closed down but the closest two could still be a fair distance away.''

Mr Morgan said the firefighters had not been given "proper reasons'' for the closing of the stations.

He said stations in the Parramatta area operated 24 hours but other stations, like Merrylands, were "on call''.

"This situation is unacceptable,'' he said.

"People pay for insurance and they should be guaranteed service if they need it and it won't be able to be fulfilled if these stations are shut.''
