He's a deadset freak
He's a deadset freak
and worldbeater.
Just when it
seemed rugby
league has been
winning the tit-for-
tat atrocity game
and the war for the
front page, Cousins
paces himself and
produces an unbea
table goal.
Timing perfect.
John Howard has
gone the other way.
The PM was
straight into action
from the election-
campaign kick off
with his $34 billion
tax-cut annouc ne
ment.
This was a high-
risk strategy fir
ing your big guns
and introducing
your bench gameb
reakers simul
taneously but he
may yet scrape
ahead as PM.
There was nothing
high risk about the
retired Andrew
Johns' announce
ment of his am
phetamine use
and before the
rugby league
season had even en
ded.
This was a no-risk
lay-down misere to
make the big game
bigger and keep
rugby league on the
front pages, where
it belongs.
Enter that man
Cousins with a
series of game-
breaking perform
ances which have
booted rugby league
into touch.
The image of a bare-
chested Cousins,
with stupid smirk
and newly tattoed
torso being dragged
out of a car by police
was the sporting
image of the sum
mer.
After the endless
headlines about his
drug problems,
Cousins' threat to
sue for wrongful ar
rest was a master's
touch.
His flight to Los
Angeles to enter a
rehabilation clinic
was better still.
Los Angeles just
the place for a
young, self-
deluding celebrity
with lots of money
to go for rehabili
tation.
What's the prob
lem? Western Aus
tralian facilities not
good enough? Not
enough spas, bars
and bedrooms?
Evidently not.
This could be the
election winner
health minister
Tony Abbott and his
coalition team have
been looking for.
Time for federal in
vention, time to re
store a health sys
tem a hopeless
Western Australian
Labor government
has neglected.
What a sorry state
of play when the
system isn't good
enough to support
AFL idolsicons in
the style of rehabili
tation to which they
are accustomed.
Cousins has since
gone missing. What
will this loveable,
crazy, mixed-up kid
think of next?
Meanwhile, rugby
league is nowhere
and it's difficult to
know what catch-up
strategy it can ado
pt.
Drug problems,
public punch-ups,
sexual-assault alle
gations; all been
done and superced
ed.
Perhaps a gay tran
svestite sex-and-
drugs romp with
union bosses, and
even that would
seemth..th.well, a poor
cousin to Cousins'
escapades.
With the cricket
season about to pro
duce its own head
lines, it's time to be
a gracious loser and
admit AFL has been
the real winner.
